Everyone who sees Augustus immediately knows that he's a Weasley.

He's got the same standard firey-red hair, pale skin, and freckles that just about everyone in his family possesses. There is no Quidditch tan on this particular Weasley, since Augustus has always been a rather indoorsy child. His father used to joke that he should change complexions with one of his ruddy cheeked elder sisters.

As if his pale skin and redhair weren't distracting enough, Augustus also tends to be a head above the rest of the crowd. Standing in at an impressive 6'0", Augustus is one of the tallest in the school, and has been thin and gangly since childhood.

His lanky form and pale skin are only exaggerated by his choice in outfits. Augustus prefers well-tailored robes of rich browns, dusky grays, and solid blacks. While it does make him look impressive, it can also be incredibly intimidating for people who aren't familiar with his laid-back ways.

Augustus was very much a wanted child.

After the births of Emilia and Elvira, Tabitha, and Susanna it was feared that the Weasley line might do what it had threatened to for years - die out. And it was more than a small few who thought that this was a well-deserved punishment after the Weasley's years of 'Muggle-coddling' and 'interference'. Annabelle and her husband Alfred tried every method (magical or Muggle) of having a male heir that could be thought of. For three years, the household's diet included hefty portions of (illegal) dragon-meats, and Anabelle couldn't be spotted without a neck full of talisman. In the end, Alfred swears it was the baked fire crab legs that did it, and Augustus was born in April of 1869.

By the time Augustus was born, the Weasleys' original motives for wanting him had been all but forgotten. Not that he was an unloved child, but their male heir had taken so long to arrive that somewhere along the lines it became more of a duty than a desire. And when Augustus was born healthy and happy, the Weasleys moved to the next natural duty - refining and marrying off their four rambunctious daughters. While Augustus wasn't exactly ignored, he was considered much less of a priority than the girls. With all the work that had gone into him, the Weasleys were merely content that Augustus exist.

And while some children might be content -- even thrilled -- with being left to themselves, Augustus most definitely was not one of them. He thrived on attention, and in the Weasley household that was sometimes hard to come by. Augustus struggled to find his place in the family for years, alternating between acting angelic, studious, athletic (which he hated), and trying his best to shine amongst his sisters. Unfortunately, every time he excelled in something it seemed to convinced his parents that he needed them even less.

So Augustus did what any sensible child would do - he stopped trying so hard. In fact, he did very much the opposite - At seven or eight, Augustus realized that his parents paid him much more attention if he was naughty. So he made a conscious choice to be, well, bad. He dipped Susanna's plaits in ink while she studied at the kitchen table, dropped the cat in the bath (while Tabitha was in it), hid in the closet during Elvira's dates, and put fireworks inside Emilia's practice bludgers. And it worked. Whether they were screaming at him or worrying over him, Alfred and Annabelle suddenly paid much more attention to their son. And if they ever realized why he was doing it, it was far too late. By the time he was eleven, his new attitude was pretty much permanent.

While you might think his behaviour might lead to him being unpopular when he started Hogwarts, it had quite the opposite effect. His fellow first-year students were quite amused by the practical jokes he played on his (seventh-year!) sister, scandalized by the shocking things he'd say, delighted by his classroom antics, and impressed by his knowledge of the school (courtesy of Tabitha). At Hogwarts, Augustus became what he always wanted to be - the center of attention.

Now that Augustus is entering his sixth year, he's calmed down a little bit. Not that he doesn't appreciate a good prank now and then -- but his priorities have shifted somewhat since puberty hit. Girls, as it turns out, like things other than dungbombs and stink pellets.

pet| A fat brown laughing owl named Bludger. Bludger was special ordered by Augstus during his first year, having become dissatisfied after starting school and seeing how common his own barn owl was. Ironically, Bludger is a bit useless these days seeing how overweight he is thanks to Augustus' excessive feeding. He ends up using his original barn owl, Ronald, for most deliveries -- though he does delight in terrifying fellow students with Bludger's unusual laughing hoot.
